Prof. Menno de Rie, Treasurer of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV), expressed his delight at the "groundbreaking" number of participants—nearly 20,000—at the annual congress in Paris. He highlighted the Academy's tremendous growth, with membership more than doubling from 6,000 to over 13,000 in just four years, viewing this as a clear appreciation of the Academy's work. Prof. de Rie also noted the expanding global reach of the EADV, with significant interest and attendance from dermatologists outside Europe, including North America, the Middle East, and India.
Beyond the congress, Prof. de Rie underscored EADV's extensive educational initiatives. These include organizing symposia, publishing two journals, and producing numerous podcasts and various educational materials. A key priority for the Academy is to stimulate and support younger dermatologists. This is achieved through reduced fees, grants, and dedicated educational "school" activities during the congress, ensuring the continued vitality of the field.
The scientific program in Paris was extensive, featuring over 600 speakers. Prof. de Rie specifically highlighted a session he co-chaired on groundbreaking abstracts, which showcased promising new drugs, particularly JAK inhibitors. These therapies, he noted, are revolutionizing dermatology by effectively treating diseases previously with limited options, such as hidradenitis suppurativa, vitiligo, and alopecia areata. The session also covered extensive research on atopic dermatitis, moving beyond existing treatments like Dupilumab to new drugs on the horizon, addressing a significant unmet patient need. Prof. de Rie expressed gratitude for the strong participation of the pharmaceutical industry, which allows for the presentation of exciting pipeline drugs, making the future of dermatology treatment look very bright.
