Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Granada and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Castilla la Mancha. After completing his residency at the Complejo Hospitalario de Toledo, he currently works as a dermatologist and researcher in the Psoriasis Unit of the Dermatology service at the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid. He directs an independent research program focused on the study of Psoriasis. <br>He completed his training with two stays in the United States at the renowned centers of the Department of Dermatology at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and the University of Pennsylvania Heath System in the state of Philadelphia.<br>Dr. González-Cantero’s research program focuses on the role of inflammation in <br>subclinical atherosclerosis. He utilizes psoriasis as a human model to study cardiometabolic diseases, and his research has been highly influential. <br>The goal of his research program is to investigate the prevalence and extent of <br>subclinical atherosclerosis across multiple vascular sites (coronary, iliofemoral and <br>carotid) in psoriasis patients and to evaluate the impact of biologic therapy on subclinical atherosclerosis in these patients.<br>For this purpose, he begun a comprehensive cardiometabolic phenotyping in psoriasis. <br>He uses advanced and innovative cardiovascular imaging technologies such as coronary computed tomography angiography and 3D vascular ultrasound. He also provides a comprehensive characterization of atherosclerosis in psoriasis patients by laboratory analysis and -omics technologies and to evaluate changes at the molecular level after treatment of skin disease. <br>For this purpose, he works closely with experts in the field (Dr. Mehta, Dr. Gelfand, Dra. <br>Fernández-Friera, Dra. González-Barderas and Dr. Solis among others) who provide additional expertise in psoriasis, cardiology and basic science to Dr. González-Cantero´s lab. <br>Dr. González-Cantero´s group was the first to utilize evaluation of the femoral arteries by ultrasound for early detection of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with psoriasis (González-Cantero, J Am Acad Dermatol, 2018). He has published extensively on the link between inflammation, atherosclerosis, and metabolic diseases in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Lancet, European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, among others. <br>Dr. González-Cantero has received numerous local and national awards and honors, including being named the best specialist in Spain. He is actively involved in several foundations and organizations in membership and leadership capacities including the International Psoriasis Council, the Psoriasis Task Force of the EADV and National Psoriasis Foundation. <br>He also serves as a reviewer for several international grant organizations as well as <br>biomedical journals.
